On the Move
Time to Move on from Congregated Settings’ – A strategy for Community Inclusion, is a model of support, whereby people with disabilities are supported to move from large institutions (congregated settings) to their own homes in the community, with the supports they need. It is about supporting people to ‘live ordinary lives in ordinary places’. Historically, in institutional settings, people lacked basic privacy and dignity. ‘Time to Move On’ is intended to address this by mainstreaming access for people to exercise their full citizenship rights.
As part of the de congregation process, thirty six (36) people supported by St Patrick’s Centre have transitioned to communities in Knocktopher, Danesfort, Kells, Ballyfoyle, Kilkenny City, Jenkinstown, Callan Road and Bagenalstown in Co Carlow during the course of 2017. Twenty three (23) people moved to the community in 2018 and two (2) have moved already this year, to locations in Kikenny City and County. Four (4) people are due to move to their homes in the community on 12th March with further moves planned throughout 2019.
It is anticipated that all people supported by St Patrick’s Centre, Kilkenny will be living their ‘good lives’ in the community in due course. Plans are ongoing to ensure that this can materialise in the shortest time frame possible.
